Robert Burns Dinner

Robert Burns is the national poet of Scotland. His poems touch a cord with most readers and range from expressions of love, to humorous events, to passionate statements about the beauty of the Scotland he lived in. Scots around the world celebrate Burns with a Burns Dinner, usually in late January. Our Burns Dinner is open to all, you do not have to be a member of the Society.

Our 2012 Dinner at the Village Square Conference Center was a great success. Kathy Curry’s arrangements with the Conference Center worked out well … attendees seemed to appreciate the buffet format. Having the haggis on the buffet line was a success … with all the haggis gone by the end of the evening (we are fairly certain it wasn’t taken by the wait staff).

Jeff Gibson did a great job in his first year as Chairman. Jeff seems to have forgotten that doing something well has a reward … you get to do it again!

Our second visit from Darrell Murray was well appreciated. Darrell has an easy style and the audience’s appreciation was evident. He brought a few unusual violins to show us, including a fascinating one with a built in recording device used in early movies.

Bill MacLean’s Immortal Memory focused on the historical events going on in Scotland before and during Burns’ life. He reminded us how close Scotland came to losing Robbie as an emigrant to the West Indies, a process ended when Robbie’s first book of poetry was well received.

Arrangements for our 2013 Dinner will be completed in the fall. Active Society members receive an invitation soon after Christmas. If you have an interest in the Burns Dinner but are not a Society member, you are welcome to attend. Please contact Bill or Eleanor MacLean at 304-842-0370 or macleanbe@earthlink.net to be added to the invitation mailing list.

See you in January 2013
